ISKME’s 3rd annual Big Ideas Fest (www.bigideasfest.org) was held this week in Half Moon Bay, CA, and as promised, creative doers and thinkers from diverse levels of education gathered to learn from and share with each other. This convening yielded creative, inspirational, and often revolutionary ideas about current educational challenges, while providing the opportunity to interact and engage with a mix of teachers, researchers, administrators, entrepreneurs, education leaders. The Institute for Knowledge Management in Education (ISKME) recently conducted a survey to look see how Developmental Education Initiative (DEI) projects want to share and collaborate. Specifically, the survey asked participants to reflect on how their DEI communities integrate resources, tools and collaborative opportunities available to them on CompletionMatters.org, and how we at ISKME might best support the college completion agendas of our member organizations. Recently, there have been lively discussions among administrators and instructors on community college campuses about acceleration in developmental education courses. As a former post-secondary instructor, I am familiar with students who need to take developmental education courses to fill departmental and breadth requirements. These courses may add an additional quarter or semester to an anticipated graduation date, and in some cases are presented in a sequence that could add a year or more to a student’s time-to-degree. Who’s got the Big Idea Fest buttons? Well, I do! As resident “Button Lady” at Big Ideas Fest 2010, I am in charge of providing Big Ideas Fest attendees with information about the variety of buttons they can earn, wear, or give away while at the Big Ideas Fest. These buttons say things such as, “U inspire me,” “I’m tweeting,” “Went for a swim,” or “Geek on duty.” So why would buttons like these be important? After all, why would grown ups be excited about getting and trading buttons?
