(Half Moon Bay, CA) – Caine’s Arcade – a short film by Nirvan Mullick about a 9-year-old boy’s cardboard arcade that’s received over 7 million views since it was posted online April 9, 2012 – is the recipient of a new annual education prize called the Big Ideas Fest Innovation in Action Award. The prize was announced today by ISKME, a nonprofit education institute and pioneer in open access learning technologies, on the final day of its Big Ideas Fest, an annual convening of innovators in education held in Half Moon Bay, which is ISKME headquarters. Like a massive volcano about to erupt and transform the teaching terrain as well as the global learning atmosphere, the fires in education are igniting key issues we need to address as a society: education for whom, when, and where? Who deserves to get it for free or at a discount? When should we take into account economic status, nationality, ethnic background, gender, special needs, and learning styles? October 30, 2012 (Half Moon Bay, CA) – All big dreams start with a Big Idea. When local yogurt café Brazzle Berry was approached by the organizers of the Big Ideas Fest – hosted by ISKME, an education institute in Half Moon Bay – to help fund scholarships for a local teacher and a high school student to attend the three-day fest, a deal was made that will happen only with the support of the community. From the moment I met Emmy Negrin during dinner at Big Ideas Fest 2011, I knew that I liked her. We hit it off quickly, sharing interests in LGBTQ issues, backgrounds in international education, and enthusiasm for our Action Collab groups. I learned she had previously been an instructor with Outward Bound and had come to BIF to explore what her next move could be. Great conversation aside, I appreciated the easy, confident attitude that Emmy exuded. (more…)
